Foot Trimming

In previous years prior to show season starting We had tried to get a foot trimmer for our cattle, unfortunately the only one we could find had a 12 week waiting list. We decided to research foot-trimming qualifications and found a course, which would result in a category one qualification. In April 2009, Robert booked the course and found it to be very interesting and educational. Mandy the booked the course in April 2011. The course not only taught us how to trim feet but to look for and treat disease, aliments and injuries. We also covered diet and nutrition, which attributes to lameness.
We use a roll over crush which alleviates stress for the animal and the operator, it is suitable for horned cattle (we treat our own Highland Cattle in the crush)
We are both members of the National Association of Cattle Foot trimmers.

The majority of lameness found in cattle is caused by winter housing and hygiene conditions, this is not applicable to the Highlander as they are not usually housed
during the winter months, however problems can occur, such as digital dermatitis and other foot infection causing lameness this is due to the cattle stood constantly in dirty, wet conditions for example when stood at a ring feeder. Laminitis due to a lack of certain trace elements can also be present around calving time, if left untreated will ultimately result in more painful condition, which become harder to correct.
Because problems with out wintered cattle can go unnoticed, I would suggest routine checks at least twice per year.
